Principles On God’s Guiding hand

Having given practical examples from real life lets delve into general principles on this concept of God’s guiding hand drawn from the Bible. Read on then:

1.The believer’s way of life or course of life is under divine guidance and control. God directs you. Do you know it was not by coincidence when David was sent by his father at the right time to go and give provisions to his brothers who were at the battle front? He arrived just in time when Goliath was taunting “I defy the armies of Israel today.” It was not a mistake. He could have come at midday and missed Goliath. If David had missed Goliath he would have missed his destiny. He would have missed his greatness because the Goliaths you kill create your destiny. They become stepping stones to your destiny. But God did not give David prior warning and explaining the significance of the timing of his visit – no, God just arranged things behind the scenes. That is what God’s guiding hand does. David did not plan to be at the battlefront. But he came just in time. While he was trying inquiring about Goliath, he learnt that Goliath had been defying the children of God for more than forty days. He also learnt about the reward that the King had promised to anyone who could take out Goliath. And David reasoned, “I become part of the royal family just by killing this Goliath as well as becoming a tax exempt individual for the rest of my life. That sounds like a good business proposition. It’s worth the risk!” The young man said “I know a good deal when I see it. Who is this man to defy the armies of the living God?” All the other soldiers thought that Goliath was defying the armies of Israel. But David knew that the Lord of hosts, the captain of the armies of God is the commander-in-chief of the armies of Israel. If you defy the armies of Israel, in reality you are defying the commander in chief so he knew that the battle was not his but the Lord’s. He knew that if he went into a battle which God would fight and he would get a tax free life and wife, then there is no better deal. So God guided him to that place and he defeated Goliath and he started on the path to royalty. It can only be God’s guiding hand. His life was guided and controlled by God.  If I was to do a poll and ask some of you how you came to be where you are now, very few of you made a conscious decision that you want to be in this city or in this Church. But asset of circumstances brought you in touch with some people who assisted you at the right time. You just happened on somebody but it was not an accident but God’s guiding hand which made sure you were in the right place at the right time. That’s one way God speaks to you. Some of you God is leading you to be in the right place to speak to somebody about Jesus and you are resisting. Some of you God is speaking to you about your destiny and how to sow seed towards your greatness and you are thinking ok I will wait until the pastor calls for a pledge.

  1. Ruth 2:1-3 1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace.
  1. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
  1. 3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.–

How do you happen accidentally on somebody’s field and you start picking corn? And it so happened that God had arranged for Boaz to appear and start blessing his workers. True Christian employers will pray for their employees and bless them. You speak a blessing over their lives, marriages, over what they are doing because when they do well in their lives, they will perform well in your business. So God arranged for her to be in the right place, others will call it coincidence, others will call it a stroke of luck or happenstance, but when she went home and she reported to Naomi what happened. Naomi told her that Boaz was a redeeming kinsman which means he could marry her. The mother in law arranged for her – that’s called an arranged wedding. Consequently Ruth married Boaz, bore a son called Obed who bore a son called Jesse who bore a son called David and out of that line came the Messiah. I ask you a question, why did God link the line of the Messiah to just his ordering the steps of a person? Because God’s guiding hand is as valid a manifestation of God’s voice as any other. If God could determine and be confident that the birth of the Messiah could work through just His ordering the steps of a poor widow to be in the right place at the right time, God can guide your footsteps. God will adjust your path. God will lead you to people, lead to situations, places where you begin to walk into your destiny. That is the power of God’s guiding hand. Theologians call it the providence of God. The providence of God is simply God seeing into your future and making preparations, arrangements so that when you get there you have what was meant for you. When you are in that situation people will say it looks like this was custom made for you. Of course it was custom made because Jehovah Jireh the Lord who sees the end from the beginning, saw that destiny and He arranged for you to walk in that path. God will speak to you by guiding your steps.

  1. God may guide believers through his guiding hand, by adjusting their way of life, by over ruling the negative things that happen in your life. I read a story of a donkey which fell into a dry well. All efforts to rescue it failed and then the owner decided to just bury it alive by shoveling in muddy sand to close the dry well. Initially the donkey was saddened when it realized that its fate was sealed. Each shovel brought it misery. However as more soil was shoveled in, it just started stepping up slowly until it could walk out of the dry well. It used the mud thrown at it as stepping stones to its freedom. So the enemy will throw something at you, and God by his providence, by his guiding hand; will take what the enemy thought he would use to destroy you, and use it to raise you up. Suddenly the mud which was supposed to sink you becomes an elevation that raises you to higher ground so that you begin to see further. God has turned the sand which was supposed to sink you into a mountain which you now stand on. How do I know? Check the following story out.

Genesis 45:4-8

4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.”

Genesis 50:20

20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

Joseph who had been sold into slavery by his brothers and Joseph said to them, “You did not send me here but God sent me here to preserve a nation.” Now think about it. They hated him and sold him as a slave out of jealousy. But God overruled what they had meant for evil and turned it for good. People worry in certain jobs; where they work with a mean boss but God lets them stay there and cook for a while because He is working at their character. Then one day God just smiles and the boss is out and they take his place because they have paid the prize. It can only be God. So if you are going to be bitter about the things that happen to you, you can miss the adjustment of God. You can miss the working of God to overrule your mistakes, to overrule the things that people meant for evil. So you have a choice, to sit there and be bitter and angry and say how can they do this.  Or you can patiently wait for God’s guiding hand to work on the situation. So we are saying God’s guiding hand, through divine providence may overrule the events and circumstances of life and turn them to your advantage. There are a lot of people thought they would die. But suddenly out of their apparent defeat came victory.  Out of what was supposed to overwhelm them came overcoming. You cannot be an overcomer unless you have something to overcome. So God uses what the enemy meant for evil and He turns it to give you a smile, stability, courage and strength. That’s God’s guiding hand.

Romans 8:28

28 And we know that God causes everything to work together* for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

What it means is that God works at all things for our good. Even the things which were negative, God chips at them and adjusts them so that the things which were meant to harm you will turn for your good. Ask Joseph. He would have never have been the Prime Minister of Egypt unless he was sold into slavery. Ask Daniel, he could never have been the second most powerful man in the kingdom of Babylon for three successive kings’ reigns until he was sold into slavery. God was turning around what the enemy meant for evil, and he was turning it for the good. That is the power of God’s guiding hand. So will you resist God’s guiding hand or will you yield yourself to what He is doing.
